A Type 1 Diabetes Guide to the Universe introduces a new way to learn to thrive with diabetes. It is the first book to integrate the psychological and emotional aspects of dealing with diabetes into the core of its approach, and it makes use of the most current and creative e-publishing tools available to give you a rich resource to read, interact with and hear all sorts of information that will help you and your family.
I worked on this project in 2013 while I was at 4byNorth Studio. I designed the visual style, the layout and the interactivity of the book.
There were many sensitive issues to consider in the design of this project.
1. When the patients with type 1 diabetes first find out about their sickness, their life completely changes and since they need to learn a lot of information about their sickness, they are usually given by their doctors a thick overwhelming book with full of medical information. As the digital book we worked on in the project was meant to replace that, it was crucial to design something sensible, comforting and easy to follow.
2. The audience of the book are both kids and adults at the same so the style of the book needed to appeal to both kids and adults. On the other hand, the medical illustration should be easily understood by kids while still keeping a certain level of seriousness. This was a thin line to walk when designing the book.
3. Another major point to consider was that this book had not only medical information but it was also meant to be a guide for emotional aspect. Therefore, it was also important to help the user distinguish easily between the type of contents and not get confused.
How to design a digital book that looks serious enough to hold medical information, but not too serious and fun enough to be easy on the patients - usually patients who are under the heavy impact of just finding out about their life changing sickness.
A set of colors that could be used in medical illustration as well as for the illustration in the contents of psychological support.
In regards to the main page color of the book, a blue color tone and a green color tone were used to easily distinguish between the content two types:
Blue in the parts related to the medical information
Green in the parts related to the psychological and emotional aspects of dealing with diabetes
Avenir, a truly versatile font which embodies a strong human nature and which has a beautiful digital display is used both as body type and display type except for the chapter tittles, for which a custom font is designed.
The custom display font for the chapter tittles is designed to encourage the user to see a relationship between diabetes and healing, and to communicate that the sickness is manageable and all it takes is to learn to cope with that, maybe even to see it all as a fun game.
